The Amethyst Trophy

Ya Das Ist Gut

The Amethyst Trophy at the Rocky Mountain Racecourse runs on Saturday and we are treated to quality of a different kind today.

Included in the quality field is Monsun, who starts from the number one hole. Monsun probably had the Amethyst as his chief target in a wet weather cycle for sprinters. He is in prime form and will make them pick up their feet. Ride The Lightning, the son of What A Rush has shown a solid turn of foot on this surface and will not lack for speed. He could be the main danger to the favorite.

The son of Hilikus Coop, Beka Cooper, looked quite promising at one stage but has not really gone on as anticipated and desperately needs a win to regain his confidence. The well-bred daughter of Straight Liner, Avalanche looks progressive – but difficult to assess on exposed form.

Valasca was not disgraced on her last cup start, and could be the dark horse in the race. She is fit and has maintained a consistent and solid formline. Frankel Farm’s Riddley ran third in the one heat on Saturday and is capable of earning at best. Sardean To The Max is drawn a bit wide, she will need to improve but looks to have the capacity to do so. Magoo’s Fine Equity is a master at conserving energy and while probably not on the right side of the track, he will have a tactical plan to win this with his runner Slowpoke Rodriquez.

1. Monsun

4yo stallion from captaincrusoe, Career earnings: $600,222
Overall rating: Admirable(57) – Fast finisher
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by Seahorse Racing
Lineage:By Dancin out of Curia Plucka Ilona
Recent form:4,1,1

Stable comments: – “This is a tough one to call – but having the heat on a slow track, then going to good for the final, is not providing many clues. However my runner is ready, and I hope for a decent run from him.”

2. Ride The Lightning

4yo stallion from Bristol Turks, Career earnings: $1,331,533
Overall rating: Reasonable(54) – Fast finisher
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by Bristol Turks
Lineage:By What A Rush out of Iced Honey
Recent form:1,1,2,4,2

Stable comments: – “I’m trying a new horse/jockey combo for this event. I hired a fires up late jockey to try and get the best out of Ride The Lightning and make the most of his style. Their run in the heat was fine, especially considering the going was slow. So a bit of sunshine and a good start might just put Lightning in the mix.”

3. Beka Cooper

4yo mare from Speed Breed, Career earnings: $296,055
Overall rating: Reasonable(54) – Stalker
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by Speed Breed
Lineage:By Hilikus Coop out of Brienne Of Tarth
Recent form:4,4,3,7,7

Stable comments: – “Beka is still looking for her first big win and maybe the Amethyst final will be her moment to shine? Beka certainly won’t be the favorite, but she might be a horse to include in the top 5 with the potential to surprise.”

4. Avalanche

4yo mare from skifam21, Career earnings: $392,600
Overall rating: Admirable(55) – Fast finisher
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by skifam21
Recent form:4,8,13,11,6

Stable comments: – “Seems to always be a tough field! It was kind of a last minute run… I’m pretty sure the horse had more to give, but what instructions to use to get that, I’m not quite sure at this time. I will be in the middle I suspect. Aiming for third.”

5. Valasca

4yo mare from Thunderspark Racing, Career earnings: $454,800
Overall rating: Reasonable(52) – Breakaway
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by Thunderspark Racing
Lineage:By Blue Orion out of Chocolate Habanero
Recent form:4,6,4,6,4

Stable comments: – “

6. Riddley

4yo mare from Frankel Farm, Career earnings: $590,200
Overall rating: Reasonable(54) – Fast finisher
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by Seahorse Racing
Lineage:By Dancin out of Poise Tres Dapple
Recent form:7,6,1,1,3

Stable comments: – “Riddley ran a decent third in the qualifier considering the ground. She will enjoy the incoming sunshine but she won’t be the only one. Couple of good ones in this field, so a top 5 finish is the best we can probably hope for.”

7. Money Machine

4yo stallion from djs stable, Career earnings: $658,966
Overall rating: Reasonable(52) – Needs space
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by Reds Breeding Stud
Lineage:By Cyan Gates out of Dante
Recent form:17,8,3,4,5

Stable comments: – “Money Machine may get a top half field finish and if it runs at it’s best could finish in the top five.would be my best effort in a cup if that happens.”

8. Farhh Talented

4yo mare from Chingford Stable, Career earnings: $65,000
Overall rating: Reasonable(51) – Unpredictable
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by Troublemaker’s
Lineage:By Dodgers Here I Go out of Noble Blood
Recent form:12,18,19,15,5

Stable comments: – “My horse Farhh Talented has not even the slightest chance of finishing in the money and I am pleased just to have made the final, however I am just making up the numbers in this field.”

9. Sardean To The Max

4yo mare from BODRUMLUCK, Career earnings: $153,000
Overall rating: Reasonable(54) – Breakaway
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by Sardean Lodge
Lineage:By Maximus Swick out of Sardean
Recent form:5,10,3

Stable comments: – “I think my mare will do a lot better speed in the final than the qualifier, yet I don’t think she will be good enough to win. There are some quality opposition in the name of Monsun and Ride the Lightning, with their inside draw they have distinct advantage. Nevertheless I expect my Sardean To The Max to be in the first three. We shall see.”

10. Gary Sunny

4yo stallion from RUMP STEAK RACING, Career earnings: $893,705
Overall rating: Satisfactory(46) – Stalker
Born:Fri 8th Apr 2016, bred by RUMP STEAK RACING
Lineage:By Young Boy out of Thang
Recent form:1,5,4,1,7

Stable comments: – “

11. Slowpoke Rodriguez

4yo stallion from Magoo’s Fine Equine, Career earnings: $1,022,400
Overall rating: Reasonable(52) – Competitive
Born:Fri 1st Apr 2016, bred by Magoo’s Fine Equine
Lineage:By Count Duckula out of Pocket Rocket
Recent form:12,11,4,2,1

Stable comments: – “Never really saw Slowpoke as one of the main contenders in the cup, but he surprised me in the heats, winning reasonably comfortably on a track that didn’t particularly suit him. The final will doubtless be different, with everybody raising their game – hopefully he’ll still have enough in reserve to improve his performance too. It will be a tough race though, and late entry for the final certainly hasn’t helped his cause.”
