The Amethyst Trophy – 21st July 2018

Amethyst Trophy

Hareeba aims for his second Amethyst win at a wet Rocky Mountain today when he saddles Cold Little Heart in the first week of cup features for the season. She makes for an interesting runner in the contest. She cracked her maiden at her fourth start. She took a while to find her feet and can now go on with it.

Bristol Turks’ Iron Maiden won a good race over the Rocky Mountain 1050m last week on trying underfoot conditions. She will prefer the extra 150m here and the daughter of Patrobas gets an opportunity from a decent draw to show how good she is. She takes on opponents with experience of the turn, so this will be a test.

DR Stables will be looking to secure a fourth Amethyst after winning the race in season 43 with Fear The Dragon. He saddles Skyguard Resident, who has won five races already. She has the advantage of having raced round the turn and showed fight when second to Iron Maiden last time out.

Ps Sos Mudchild has run two seconds from eight starts starts without a win. She ran on steadily over 950m last time and should be thereabouts again. Painter Woody is an improving four year old, and this will be his first dip into feature waters.

Samantha Flyer ran a decent fourth in the Saturday heat behind Iron Maiden. She gets Carrie Marc on aboard, who hasn’t partnered her yet and she could earn in this field. The Fairlawns-trained stallion Sonic Boom jumps from gate #7, has been thereabouts and could earn a cheque in this race.

Yorulmaz sends Kartalice to the track. A smart third in the heat suggested she is well on her way back to a comeback of note – but this race will tell her connections where they are going with her. The 4yo mare Nowa Buh Missy ran third behind Cold Little Heart in last Saturday’s heat over 950m. She didn’t run a bad race over the ground, and she can chase place money.

The once reliable Captain’s Bishop, considered good enough to run in the Ascot Vale, is off form and showed nothing in the pipe-opener last time. At his best the son of Made You Girly could make them run, but he would need to find his form of last term.

Pre-race comments from:

Bristol Turks – “I’m looking forward to the Amethyst final. Iron Maiden is a short runner but seeing as the going is slow and she’s a muddy, it made sense to enter her in this. I’m also trying out a new jockey, the run in the heat was encouraging especially considering that was the first run of this pairing. The field is quality, Inca and Hareeba both have high quality muddies so expect the race to be very competitive. Top 3 is the target for Maiden. Hopefully she’ll deliver as I had to get up at 3am to get her a good gate.”

Hareeba – “Cold Little Heart has been given every chance to be competitive in its races and early on was a bridesmaid to Ersin’s Iron Maiden. So Iron Maiden is the one to beat and a deserved favourite.  Good luck to all.”

DR Stables – “Skyguard Resident will like the track condition but would prefer a longer distance. Regardless she should contend for the cup. Top 3 wouldn’t surprise. Race instructions will be the key in this race. Iron Maiden looks like the one too beat. Best of luck to everyone.”

St Simon Racing – “Captain’s Bishop is ready, fast and ……… will be lucky to place in this field after that heat. Look elsewhere. Good luck to the other competitors, I will watch from the back.”

Fairlawns – “Sonic ran the Amethyst heat in a reasonable time with the trainer stating “A fast finish is good, and this horse still had more to give.” So if we provide a sprint jockey and set race instructions for top speed we might grab a top five, fingers crossed. It’s great to be involved in these races, the competition is top class and my horses are in the mix. Good luck all.”

regalroller – “Nowa Bush Missy is going to be up against it in these conditions, if the track goes heavy we will be nowhere. If the track stays slow a top 5 finish would be a great result.”

flying spurs – “Samantha Flyer has been a very good servant through London apprentice league, so based on that felt it was worth running in a world cup. Ground is slow and may find mudlarks too good , so any one of four or 5 mudlarks could win a top 5 is the best I can hope for.”
