The Lowe Guineas, the premier medium cup for 4yo, proudly sponsored by Hareeba, runs for the 23rd time this season on Saturday.
On paper its looks a very nice field, with almost every stable having a chance.
Lets start with dual cup winner Ajax. He catches the eye, and if he repeats his run in last seasons Breeders Mile, we could salute him again on Saturday.
Secret Pharaoh again looks to be the biggest threat. He comes from one of the hottest cup stables at the moment, namely Dixon Racing. The trainer has his stallion primed for the race and the captain may have a sleepless night.
RCS Locos normally takes his time to get his youngsters going, and Shadow Warrior is no different. His last 2 wins looks impressive, and he may find itself in the money.
Lots of chances to the other runners not mentioned, all are capable of getting in the money and causing a upset in a very open race.
That’s what makes this particular cup final well worth a bet and a must see.
Now enough from me, lets hear what the trainers think.
|4yo stallion from captaincrusoe, Career earnings: $1,613,322
Overall rating: Reasonable(54) – Fast finisher
Comments: captaincrusoe says – Ajax has surprised me in his last few runs, as he is lacking experience compared to the other runners. I have the same midget on as in his previous starts and I hope for a good run in a small but very competitive field.
|4yo stallion from Dixon Racing, Career earnings: $982,711
Overall rating: Reasonable(53) – Fast finisher
Comments: Dixon Racing says – Secret Pharaoh did well last season to run close in the two cup finals, he is one that should improve as he gets older and I’m not sure he’s quite ready to take on the classy Ajax or the good looking mare Dunedin Star and one cannot discount the chances of previous cup winner Never Nothing. Hoping for a good run and a share of the minor money.
3. Dunedin Star
|4yo mare from Desert Wind Stables, Career earnings: $701,311
Overall rating: Reasonable(51) – Competitive
Comments: Desert Wind Stables says – She is surprising me as had earmarked her as a breeder and as such not trained her very seriously (c.6-7hrs for first 2 seasons). Suspect final will be too much gor her but who knows. Didn’t try to hold back too much in the heat which often skews the times and expectations. My passive jockey is a slight concern as she isn’t great in the final metres but then again, its a longer medium so maybe it will all come together + happy with her stats/ stride/ weight. Have been very busy in RL but if I bet at all I think it will go to a fast finisher.
|4yo stallion from Get Square Lodge, Career earnings: $224,500
Overall rating: Reasonable(50) – Early sprinter
Comments: Get Square Lodge says – Mate …to be honest… if we can run in the first 6….I’ll be over the moon.
Did work well at the track this week!!!!!!!
|4yo stallion from Speed Breed, Career earnings: $660,330
Overall rating: Reasonable(50) – Fast finisher
Comments: Speed Breed says – Nealan hasn’t been trained as hard as other 4yo’s but he could surprise on race day. I didn’t hold him back during the qualifier, but it was the horse and jockey’s first ride together. Nealan should be V/V/V on race day and isn’t showing any IP issues.
Nealan is a long shot, but you never know….
|4yo stallion from RCS Locos, Career earnings: $787,600
Overall rating: Reasonable(51) – Fast finisher
Comments: RCS Locos says – After finishing a disappointing 8th in his previous cup, he really has shown the improvements that make me believe he will do well in the Lowe Guineas final. After picking up a slight injury in the Spring Guineas, he needed a little TLC to get him back fit again without hindering his training progress too much. The quality of runners in this final is very high and I’m sure several stables believe they can win but hopefully Shadow Warrior can produce on the day. All the best to the rest……
|4yo mare from Pugstable, Career earnings: $1,553,700
Overall rating: Reasonable(50) – Competitive
Comments: Pugstable says – She is coming along nicely. She has never been heavily trained due to my large breeding stable and her last 4 training sessions have been 2 x 4 hours swimming as her muscle was a little down and 2 x 6 hours easy beach gallops leading into the cup final. As a competitive I will hope to have her within 30 metres of the leaders going into the last 2 furlongs, this is where the race will be won. She ran a bit wide in the heats and a change race instructions to go a bit easier early on, and stick to rail and chase hard, hopefully finishing off strongly as she has plenty of stamina and the extra furlong in the final should suit her. Well that’s the plan, the rest will be up to my jockey to get the job done. I rate her a 10-1 chance.
|4yo stallion from Moonlight Stables, Career earnings: $184,000
Overall rating: Reasonable(50) – Fast finisher
Comments: Moonlight Stables says – I’m hoping he lives up to his namesake (which by the way is a computer generated name so he had to keep it!) and becomes one legendary race horse & stud. However, I’ll let you in on a little secret: it probably isn’t going to be in this race.
He’s got a lot of heart and I wouldn’t count him out of the running just yet. But I can’t recommend betting the house on him either 😉 Instead I would keep an eye out for him in upcoming medium cups
|4yo mare from Orange Hills, Career earnings: $490,960
Overall rating: Satisfactory(48)
Comments: Orange Hills says – Shine Great-d has been running well in cup heats, but very disappointing in cup finals so far. Hopefully, the Lowe Guineas will stop that streak. Top half would be great. Health wise she is lagging a little bit behind, so that is reason for concern.
10. Prince Orion
|4yo stallion from Durbridge, Career earnings: $790,308
Overall rating: Satisfactory(47) – Fast finisher
Comments: Durbridge says – I don’t think my horse is quite up with the rest of this field to be honest. Prince Orion is new to the stable only having her 3rd start so will find it hard but I am still going to run him anyway.
11. Makers Mark
|4yo stallion from WWE STUD, Career earnings: $392,273
Overall rating: Reasonable(50) – Natural champion
Comments: WWE STUD says – My horse should go OK. He is an 11 over the distance so right up there, last week I blame the jockey, he just hasn’t been riding well for my stable, got a different one on this week, but I doubt I’ll see the money these big races get dominated by the big stables I think RCS Locos horse is the one to beat, but hey if your not in you can’t win.
12. Sparrow Fart
|4yo mare from Sardean Lodge, Career earnings: $615,610
Overall rating: Admirable(59) – Needs space
Comments: Sardean Lodge says – What a heat that was it was last Saturday, the winner ran the 3rd fastest time ever for the race conditions. I wanted to take it easy in the heat but I don’t think she could of given much more sadly, unlike some in the other heat.
Isadora decided to take the week off between runs and I fear he has come back with more than racing on his mind and therefore may lack the focus to give Sparrow a good run. I had to wait until Wednesday to even secure his services for the final. Drawing wide may yet be a blessing as she prefers galloping room and her training this week should have topped her off nicely for the run.
Ajax is clearly the one to beat and Secret Pharaoh and Dunedin Star too. It is clear though that all horses have improved leaps and bounds since their breeders contest.
BIG THANKS – To all you people who are running in the Lowe Guineas and took the time to reply and make this preview so much more than it would be less your comments .
