The Great Sphinx Cup remains one of the most prestigious races to win for any owner or trainer. With a history of close on 12 seasons and some of our greatest horses having won it, Saturday’s renewal promises plenty. The lion was a powerful symbol in ancient Egypt as it represented strength and courage. The great cat was also considered the supreme guardian and tamed lions sometimes accompanied kings into battle. The quest of the Holy Grail is set for one of these horses and owners to reign supreme.
Let the battle commence!
The cup is proudly sponsored by the Alliance.
1. Dodge And Swerve |
3yo colt from Sootie, Career earnings: $1,178,422 Overall rating: Reasonable(51) – Mud-lark |
Comment: The 3yo Like A Boss colt has been ultra consistent and will jump as one of the favorites. Well drawn at 1 and with the services of Sima Connley, Dodge And Swerve will relish the slow ground.
2. From Outta Space |
3yo filly from Ezulwini, Career earnings: $1,261,950 Overall rating: Satisfactory(46) – Mud-lark |
Comment: Ezulwini sends out his filly From Outta Space, who has more experience over the medium distances, she showed her well being in the heat with a good win, and must have a good chance to finish in the money.
3. Viking Power |
3yo colt from New Scotland Yard, Career earnings: $1,096,566 Overall rating: Admirable(55) – Mud-lark |
Comment: Viking Power is the highest rated horse in the race, winner of the Sires Produce end of last season. The son of Laak Attack finished runner up in a desperately close call behind Type Darkest Arial in the 3yo short Breeders Cup last time. The stable knows what it takes to win this race. Big big chance. He is in prime form and looks very fit and ready to win again. That is certainly the way it appears on paper too.
4. Type Darkest Arial |
3yo colt from DR Stables, Career earnings: $1,058,362 Overall rating: Acceptable(43) – Mud-lark |
Comment: The 3yo son of Deledio Senseless is a top sort, has oodles of ability and boasts the heart of a lion. Winner of the 3yo short Breeders Cup earlier in the season, another top class effort is expected.
5. Barbie Ferrari |
3yo filly from C M Pace Ranch, Career earnings: $1,097,922 Overall rating: Acceptable(41) |
Comment: This game filly gets a run but it is difficult seeing her getting the better of the top-rated runners in a race of this nature. Ran and won her heat on Sunday.
6. Always Something |
3yo filly from Pugstable, Career earnings: $121,000 Overall rating: Acceptable(43) – Mud-lark |
Comment: The Pugstable galloper Always Something, looks like a classy progressive type, who will be running at them late.
7. Hermione Deelites |
3yo filly from Dopey Donkeys Digs, Career earnings: $175,750 Overall rating: Satisfactory(48) – Mud-lark |
Comment: Hermoine Deelites has run four modest places, and she is bound to start showing more.
8. War Avenging |
3yo filly from Rockstar Racing, Career earnings: $270,369 Overall rating: Satisfactory(47) – Fast finisher |
Comment: War Avenging is still a maiden, she is bumping a few decent sorts in this race and with the ground against her, has it all to do.
9. Magic Carpet Ride |
3yo filly from Moonlight Stables, Career earnings: $508,075 Overall rating: Satisfactory(45) – Mud-lark |
Comment: She shed her maiden tag over the course in her last run on Sunday. That said, she is never far off the action, but might battle with race fitness for the final on Saturday to have a serious chance.
10. Shamrock |
3yo colt from Gray Dog Stables, Career earnings: $225,900 Overall rating: Satisfactory(49) – Mud-lark |
Comment: The 3yo colt from the recent world cup winning stable, is another who looks to improve with the racing experience, and may be equal to the test.
11. Wheels Talent |
3yo filly from RUMP STEAK RACING, Career earnings: $790,425 Overall rating: Satisfactory(45) – Mud-lark |
Comment: Wheels Talent ran a cracker in the heat to finish 3rd, the stable hopes that he repeats that effort.
